Even if your dentures are relatively new, they can still sometimes cause painful lesions known as denture sores. Denture sores typically occur due to pressure from the denture on the nerves of the gums. They can also be caused by bacterial infection. If you are experiencing discomfort due to denture sores, here’s how you can treat them at home, and when it’s time to see your dentist for more help.
Curing Denture Sores
Before you can determine how to cure your denture sores, it’s important to determine what is causing them. Bacterial infections will need to be treated by a dentist. If you notice that your gums are red and swollen, see your dentist right away. If there are no other symptoms present, speak to your dentist about having your dentures evaluated. There may be adjustments or repairs that can be made directly to the prosthetic to help alleviate any pressure that could be causing the sores to develop.
Home Remedies
Once you have made your appointment to see your dentist, there are many things you can do at home to help lessen the pain of denture sores until you can be treated. Here are a few suggestions:
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush for brushing your gums and any remaining teeth. Be sure you are also cleaning your dentures well. If you don’t properly care for them, they can harbor dangerous bacteria that could cause gum infections.
- Chew your food very slowly and thoroughly so you don’t irritate the nerves of your gums.
- Gently massage your gums with your fingertips.
- Apply a homemade salve comprised of cloves soaked in olive oil directly to your gums.
- Gargle sage tea.
- Rinse your mouth with saltwater.
- Use an over-the-counter pain reliever.
Additionally, be sure to always remove your dentures to brush and floss them each time you eat and leave them soaking in a glass of water or denture soak overnight. Never sleep with them in your mouth after your first 24 hours of wear.
Remember, your dentures should fit securely and comfortably and should not cause painful sores. If you notice that they are, or if there are any other changes in your gums or soft tissue, schedule a visit with your dentist for help as soon as possible.
